RV Payload Calculator: How much payload is really left?
Between the GVWR and the manufacturer's unloaded weight, many motorhomes have only 1,500 to 3,000 lb – and passengers, water, propane, cargo and add-ons eat into that quickly. This calculator adds up everything that rides along and shows how much payload is left or by how much you'd be overloaded.
It accounts for what may already be included in the empty weight (driver, fresh water, propane tank), so nothing is counted twice.

How it's calculated
The starting point is the unloaded vehicle weight (UVW) from the manufacturer's weight label. Per the RVIA label it includes the vehicle with standard equipment and full fuel, engine oil and coolant – but no occupants, fresh water or propane. If you have a weigh-station ticket of the empty vehicle instead, enter that and tick what was on board.

For water and propane only what exceeds the included amounts is counted – so nothing is counted twice.
Cargo carrying capacity (CCC)
US motorhomes built since 2008 carry an RVIA weight label stating the cargo carrying capacity: CCC = GVWR − UVW − weight of full fresh water (incl. water heater) − weight of full propane. It's a good cross-check for your result: the CCC must cover occupants, cargo and add-ons.
The EU minimum payload check (10 × (seats + length in m)) is a European type-approval rule and is not shown for US vehicles.
Worked example
Class C motorhome with 14,000 lb GVWR and 11,500 lb UVW (no occupants, water or propane included). Two people, 30 gal of fresh water, two full 20 lb propane tanks, 330 lb of cargo, 77 lb of add-ons (bike rack, solar) and two e-bikes weighing 110 lb together.

The variables explained
- Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR)
- Maximum permitted weight of the loaded vehicle per the certification label on the driver's door frame. Must never be exceeded when loaded.
- Unloaded vehicle weight (UVW)
- Manufacturer figure with full fuel and standard equipment; US labels exclude occupants, water and propane. Better: weigh the empty vehicle at a CAT scale.
- Factory options
- Options not included in the UVW. Found in the manufacturer's weight information or price list.
- Add-ons
- Everything installed after delivery: racks, solar, batteries, satellite dish, hitch.
- Fresh water included
- Water the manufacturer counted in the empty weight (US labels: usually none). Only water beyond that counts as payload.
- Propane tank included
- Weight of the propane tank the manufacturer counted in the empty weight (US labels: usually none).
Common mistakes
- Taking the dry weight from the brochure instead of the label or the scale – options are missing then.
- Checking only the gross weight: with a rear garage and bike rack the rear gross axle weight rating (GAWR) is often exceeded even though the gross weight fits.
- Underestimating water: 30 gal of fresh water is 250 lb, plus gray and black tanks if driven full.
- Forgetting e-bikes: two e-bikes plus rack quickly weigh 150 lb – at the very back on the lever arm.
- Counting fuel twice: the tank is already included in the UVW.
Assumptions and limits
- The driver weight defaults to 150 lb (68 kg) per FMVSS 110 (49 CFR § 571.110); whether the driver is included in the empty weight depends on your figure and can be set.
- Manufacturer figures for the empty weight can deviate; only weighing gives certainty.
- Axle loads are not calculated; they must be checked separately (bike rack calculator for the rear axle).

Frequently asked questions
How much payload does a typical motorhome have?
Class B camper vans often have 1,000–2,000 lb of CCC, Class C motorhomes 1,500–3,000 lb, but some are much lower. After deducting passengers, water, propane and cargo, less than 500 lb of reserve is common.
What happens when overloaded?
Beyond possible fines at inspection, the real problems are braking distance, tires and handling – overloaded tires are a major cause of RV blowouts. Insurers may also reduce payouts after an accident. Weigh the loaded rig at a CAT scale once a season.
Can I increase my GVWR?
Generally not: the GVWR is set by the chassis manufacturer based on brakes, axles, tires and suspension. Suspension upgrades improve handling but do not raise the legal rating. Reduce weight or choose a chassis with a higher rating.
